Gum Disease Treatment

Millennium Dental Care ensures early diagnosis and quality treatment for gum disease

Gum Disease is an inflammatory disease caused by bacterial infection. It most commonly occurs due to improper oral hygiene or it can even be caused by hormonal changes during pregnancy.

About Gum Disease

Gum Disease (Periodontal Disease) is the most common infectious disease in the world and if left untreated it can lead to tooth loss.

Did you know:

  • 80% to 90% of all teenagers have some form of gingivitis (inflamed gums)
  • 75% of adult tooth loss for people over the age of 35 is due to Periodontal Disease

These statistics alone show the importance of your general check-up with Millennium Dental Care, which will ensure that any signs of disease are identified early.

Causes of Gum Disease

While periodontal disease is caused by plaque, a number of other factors including poorly fitting bridges, badly aligned teeth and defective fillings contribute to the development of this condition. If an infection develops between the teeth, the gums will begin to pull away, become red and swollen and even bleed during chewing and brushing.

Signs and Symptoms of Periodontal Disease

Periodontal disease can progress undetected as it is seldom painful and is frequently free of any obvious signs or symptoms. This eventuates in support bone being destroyed, and soft tissue being damaged. Periodontal disease, while commonly not painful can result in a number of other physiological symptoms.

Common questions for diagnosis:

  • Do your gums bleed when you brush or floss your teeth?
  • Are your gums red, swollen or tender?
  • Do you have sores in your mouth?
  • Are your gums receding? Have they pulled away from your teeth?
  • Do your teeth appear longer than they have in the past?
  • Are there spaces developing between your teeth?
  • Do you suffer from bad breath?
  • Do you have a constant bad taste in your mouth?
  • Are your teeth more sensitive than usual?
  • Are any of your teeth loose?
  • Is there any change in the way your teeth fit together when you bite?

If you answered yes to any of the above questions, we recommend that you visit us as soon as possible for a thorough gum examination.

Advanced technology and the treatment of gum disease

Although periodontal disease is a serious condition, its effects can be stopped and disease progression halted with proper treatment. This involves a thorough initial cleaning by our hygienist or dentist as well as intensive hygiene instructions which will be provided to guide you through treatment. We will monitor your gums for signs of improvement or worsening and may even recommend surgery if your condition becomes more severe.

Exciting new grafting procedures are now available to enable dentists to replace destroyed bone and gum with combinations of bovine bone and stem cell protein gels (emdogain). Dr Rosenberg has been using these products for a number of years with some dramatic results. Dr Rosenberg can help restore teeth that have been considered “lost causes” with long term prognosis and efficient treatment procedures.
